Today I started in the small town of Spur, while walking Scout I saw some cool old American sheet metal and tractors.
As I was walking back to my car I saw something winking out at me from behind a broken window. Who could it be?
Look at that cute little guy!
This thing made me irrationally happy, and I have no idea why.
As I drove out of Spur like yesterday as I left Austin the weather improved from slightly rainy to sunny and pleasant. Also the scenery started to vary more, especially as I entered some of the canyons. I took video of the whole thing in addition to stills, I'll try to upload some later when I have more time. The canyons along the highway were astonishing, and almost completely deserted.
The wide openness of the area was breathtaking, especially with almost no human impact in sight. I continued onto Palo Duro Canyon State Park, which was even more breathtaking, although much much more crowded, which ruined it in a way. I didn't take many photos, I'll upload more detailed video of me driving through it later once I have time to edit/process it all
Growing up in a pretty flat state (Michigan) and then working in mostly South Texas for the last few years I'm not exactly used to canyons like this, I can't even image what the Grand Canyon is going to look like on Monday.
After I left the State Park I went through Amarillo, TX got some Whataburger (eat your heart out In-n-Out) and then stopped by a Best Buy to pick up more memory cards (there is about a 15 mile gap in the time lapse after the Whataburger). From Amarillo I drove into New Mexico and ended up at a motel in Albuquerque.
Albuquerque was.... shitty. While taking Scout out to take a shit instead of doing her business she proceeded to instead roll around in some different shit she found (literal shit). Now I have a shit covered dog in a motel that made an exception for me about even having a dog. I put her in the shower and shampooed her good. Afterwich I took a shower. When I got out everything still smelled like shit, so I washed her again. When I finished that I discovered she had shit all over the floor on the other side of the bed when I had been showering. Shit! Luckily it was pretty solid and easy to clean up. The joys of pet ownership.
Tomorrow I'll drive to the Grand Canyon via the El Malpais National Monument, both of which I am looking forward to very much.

Cool photos and post, especially the "shitty" part! I laughed at all the shits (8) in the one paragraph but not once anywhere else in the post. I've had the pleasure of riding back home in the car with 2 dogs that thought they needed to cover themselves in some kind of crap while on a walk miles from home, not nice at all

The video reminds me just how wide open most of the country is. I live in suburbia not too far from NYC so everything is wall to wall houses/stores/traffic even out here. I have to cross a few bridges onto the mainland and leave Long Island to get the vastness. The older I get the more I want it too. 10 years till retirement.

My whole life I've always said I wanted to live in a city, currently I live in Austin which I love. But a good friend of mine has 15 acres out west of the city in a place called Dripping Springs, which is absurdly beautiful. Also having space allows him to have a garage like this:
My conclusion is that I need to become rich so I can have both.
